The Concept

Dr Jekyll - InsideInfo - Megadrive One VIP

Insideinfo starts the EP off in extremely fine form, encompassing the playful adventurous mind of Dr Jekyll before the madness of Hyde is unleashed. This rolling, exciting, fulfilled adventure is aided by melodic strings and uplifting samples, the solid and expertly precise drums create the foundation of this tale taking the listener on a continually forward moving adventure. Smooth deep bass lines resound throughout the journey smothered in underlying neuro bass layers which help to add an extra element to this diverse story. Another killer on the dance floor for all those who like it rolling.

Mr Hyde : Insideinfo - Clash

Insideinfo directs an audible performance of a man caught between a million thoughts, Clash is taken through stages of thunderous bass lines and foundered on a complex labyrinth of drums. The bass heavy roars of the tortured mind can be heard resounding throughout the movie, ensuring any event goers are unable to stay in their seats.
The harmonic orchestral choir strings help set the stage as your conscience is drawn into his dream, calm overwhelms you for only a moment, then 'Clash' thrusts you back into the twisted nightmare of chain saw like bass lines and disturbed beats.
A dance floor smasher.

Dr Jekyll : Materia - Standing Still VIP

Materia brings his Swiss techniques to the cast of 'Standing Still VIP', an updated lick to the original classic ‘Standing Still’, the beautiful vocal driven performance is accompanied by dubby neuro bass lines wrapped in a arousing tape delay, this techy cross of Liquid / Neuro and Dub helps provide a enjoyable tune on both dance floors and MP3 players, neuro bass edits throughout keep the flow interesting and progressive.

Mr Hyde : Sidewalk - Night Ghosts

'Sidewalk' steps in to score the epic 'Night Ghosts', he creates an eerie start to this epic tale with displaced hi hats and atmospherics. The film of sound then starts to takes life with a masterfully crafted hip hop beat layered with bubbling, morphing bass stabs, drawing the audience in to the calm before the storm. Suddenly 'Night Ghosts' drops with a fast moving freight train of heavy drums and whirling bass lines morphing from shape to shape, the deep sub bass carries this neuro roller along gaining more and more energy as it progresses. The Bass lines begin to shift; expanding to the bridge and on re entering the bass fades then teases with heavy sub bass and lets the drums rolls out to the break down. Touching back from where it started 'Night Ghosts' starts to build again, all elements now excited; the drums and introduced with full effect; the bass lines twisting and morphing; a new added layer of distortion adds to the growing energy of the tune as all hell breaks loose and the universe no longer exists, not one for the faint hearted and a huge crowd pleaser.

Axiom | CITRUS : RENEGADE HARDWARE : DSCI4 : CYANIDE RECORDINGS : SHADOWLAW RECORDS : HOSTILE RECORDINGS : SYNDROME AUDIO : STATE OF MIND MUSIC : REDLIGHT RECORDINGS |

Axiom stepped into the Drum and Bass scene in 2005, when he met Optiv (C4C) at a party and was invited for a collaboration, the result was the tune "nightfalls" which was released on Optiv’s redlight recordings. Kurt Gluck is SUBMERGED. He is the founder of the Ohm Resistance and co founder of Obliterati – 2 of the US' most respected, creative and genre-jarring drum n bass labels. A creator and arranger of electronic music of all types, he focuses mainly on blasting the boundaries of drum n bass wide open. Whether it is thru jagged breakbeat/blastbeat structures, collaborations in the studio with musicians such as Bill Laswell, Pharoah Sanders, Enduser, and Corrupt Souls, or his confrontational artwork, the concept behind SUBMERGED is consistent – ever challenging, ever expanding. Theft and restructure, thru sample based music. Appropriate and Deface.

A member of the elite amongst drum n bass DJs/live performers, he has performed in groups with many infamous artists – from legends such as Milford Graves, John Zorn and Toshinori Kondo, to modern forces such as Mike Patton and Dr. Israel. A veteran of many tours as a DJ and as live act, SUBMERGED has performed in places from the extravagant to the obscure. From huge festivals in the US to industrial grain mills in the Baltics, the sound remains the same – heavy, crushing and mind bending.  JADE Interview (BSE, Citrus, 1210) & This Way Up Review Music Displaced 13/09  17:26

After signing a track to Black Sun Empire Recordings in 2004 like a giant meteor hitting tha face of tha moon he made his mark on the Drum and Bass scene not letting up Jade has moved from strength to strength, with releases on a number of established labels and shows around Europe, tours down under and an up coming release schedule of pure platinum! After his latest show in London we’re lucky to have a few words with tha stripy boxer wearing man known as Jade!!

Hi Jade, to get tha ball rolling, who do you rate as your number one sexiest girl in the world? (for tha pics or stfu crew)

When and how did you first get into Drum and Bass?
My first encounter with dnb was accidental. We practically hidden away from rain, in a club. I must admit my feelings at first were contradictory. I liked what I heard, but I couldn’t make difference between the tracks at all, and that annoyed me :) They all sounded all the same to me. After that I put my hands on a mix by loxy, the tracklist consisted of bad company, kemal, ed rush & optical, etc dubs. It was the fresh sound I was after. Soon I found myself on drum and bass parties, as I got more into the vibe it consumed me. Before this I wasn’t able to pick a genre when I was asked what I was listening to. However I kept my eyes open ever since

How would you explain your sound?
What I like about drum and bass is the pure energy. 170-180 bpm is the perfect tempo for me when it comes to electronic music. I can’t describe “my sound” easily. My tracks are usually very different, I don’t like to repeat myself. What I always try to achieve is a rolling, techy – yet organic sounding, funky – but still dry, not too cheesy sound. I find sound engineering also very important, that is the key to make the tune work.

You live in Budapest, a country that has given us great producers like Chris.SU, Mindscape, SKC, ICR & Matt-U to name a few (like the rhyme?), how do you think the area you are from has moulded your sound?
It is definitely an inspiring environment. My serious career as a producer started with teaming up with Matt-u; also I got a lot of help from SKC and Chris. I have heard many times that there is something like “Hungarian sound” exists

What labels have you released on?
BSE recordings, Moving Shadow, Citrus, 1210, Spawn, Cyberfunk

You have a number of releases and forthcoming tunes with other producers, do you prefer to work on your own or part of a collaboration when making tunes?
Both have its advantages, collaboration is always a compromise in some way, but also a great deal of fun, and influence. When working alone its great that you have a lot time to focus on small details as well, when there is someone else you have to keep the work effective. I enjoy both :win:

Who would you like to work with in the future?
There are two collabs in the making with Chris.Su, one with Axiom, probably there will be one with State of Mind and we also talked about one with Dylan Nocturnal. And of course Minscape and Matt-U, as usual. Whom I would like to work in the very distant future, I would say Calyx, Break, or Audio...

What’s your current top ten?
BREAK - Submerged (CALYX & TEEBEE remix)
OPTIV - Brainworm
BSE – Monologue
PROLIX & NOCTURNAL – Bad Blood
MATT-U – Woland
MINDSCAPE - Malfunction
RREGULA & DEMENTIA – Ocean Catch
AXIOM - Scavenger
MINDSCAPE - No Escape (NOISIA remix)
C4C – Never acid again
JADE – The Prey

We’ve just caught you playing at This Way Up in London; it was the highlight of my night, we hear you’ve got a tour in New Zealand & Australia next year where can we catch you in the near future and what do you bring to the stage?
I wish I could tell you more about that tour. We had one scheduled this September with matt-u, but sadly that got cancelled..
This way up was absolutely wicked! I am happy I could finally pay a visit to the world’s dnb capital, and what’s more the night turned out crazy!

So, let us know what the ever growing Jade fan base can expect in the near future, what have you got forthcoming?
To begin with, an EP at Citrus: ‘Ready’, ‘The Prey’, ‘Cryptic’, and ‘Bitch (Audio remix)’. The remix is being done right now, I can’t wait to hear it, I am sure it will be a massive hit. Audio is one of the most decent producer’s atm in the scene.
There is one tune signed to Gridlok’s P51 called ‘Cracks in the Ceiling’, the flip is unsure yet. We are working on 2 tunes with Chris.SU, one is fully done, called ‘Digital Mind’, and the other will be finished very soon. On the forthcoming LP of Mindscape you can find ‘Insomnia’, and ‘Black Lotus (Break remix)’. I have 2 tunes forthcoming on a smaller (but very nice :) ) UK label called Close2Death: ‘Silent Hell’ with Rusher, and ‘Synth City’ with Cell-D & M-Tech. We have a fully finished, but unsigned tune with Matt-U: ‘Dread Moon’. At the very moment I am working on a remix for a London based breakbeat label, Cyberfunk. The track is called ‘Arms Race’ by Odissi & Quest. And there will be an other remix very soon for ELP Collective too, from a Metrik track. And while we are at remixes, I have remixed BSE’s ‘Stasis’ recently, however the future of that track is unsure yet..

This Way Up review / words by Matthew tromsa / IZM

THIS WAY UP / 01.09.07 / JACKS CLUB - LONDON BRIDGE

I arrived in Jacks Club at 9pm just in time for the exclusive set by Ruse Record’s own Displaced. Played an hour before the event kick off and to a small group of promotion related friends it was packed with forthcoming dubs and was a good chance to test the club’s heavy yet clear sound system.

The door opened at 10pm to the sounds of Sidius (Sound Artillery). It was really reassuring to see a hefty queue of hungry tech-d’n’b heads already waiting outside and I reckon it was the man behind the decks himself who was responsible for the floor filling up with raving crowds as early as 20 minutes into the party. Combining, fresh off the press promos with classic neurofunk rollers, was a sure shot and finishing with explosive, ‘Waking The Dead’, by Wayz and Sidius, only added to the great atmosphere inside the place.

Next up we had Ganja Tek’s artist InsideInfo. The set he played was one of my personal favourites and with the heavy beats being dropped the party started gaining some serious momentum. In the meantime Intense Records owner Shuffle and MC Deefa began unleashing the funk in the liquid arena, which proved to be a really good spot to chill out after the main room craziness.

The venue itself has this raw, industrial feel to it and by midnight the people inside seriously contributed to the atmosphere that old warehouse raves used to have reworked with a future lick. I then had my chance to rock the crowd and I’ve got to say – I haven’t enjoyed djing so much for a long time, fantastic vibe, crystal clear monitors and gut twisting bass – you don’t need anything else to make for a quality playout.

Jade then took over the decks and what else could be said apart from the fact he completely stole the show!! Dropping some killer tunes by such as ‘Dread Moon’ and project 51 forthcoming, ‘Cracks In The Ceiling’ (his collaborations with Matt-U) and VIP versions of recent neurofunk releases galore, his 2 hour mix was a definite highlight of the night. Upon being asked if he had any problems with covering for absent Spor his response was “I play as long as I’m allowed to play” and the feedback from the crowd suggests they’d wished he’d gone for longer.

At the same time Soul:R’s Lynx was getting ladies into booty shaking mode in the Intense’s Liquid room. His trademark minimal steppy material together with a packed room and brilliant atmosphere and EZ Rollers’ Messy MC’s lean yet dynamic flow is what for me was one of the greatest soulful D’n’B sets I ever witnessed and from the crowd reactions they where feeling the same.

Our main headliner Friction has arrived late due to some traffic problems on the M-25, but in return he graced the event with a pure techy Drum and Bass set and one to be remembered. To be able to see one of the producers involved in the making of seminal Stakka & Skynet’s Clockwork LP dropping tracks from the album and see them damaging the floor the same way they did upon the original release was something you don’t see in London on a regular basis. You could easily tell he loved taking his mix to the Neurofunk side and Friction himself confirmed afterwards, it was refreshing to stray from his standard mixes. At the same time Artificial Intelligence were sparking up the Liquid Funk stage with their rolling bass and teases off their forthcoming album.

Next up to heat the main room, where Concord Dawn. The New Zealanders came correct with their blend of Trance vocals and drilling basslines. Hits such as “Don’t Tell Me” and Makoto’s rework of MJ’s Human Nature got played and with plethora of New Zealand clubbers in the place you could really feel the wicked atmosphere they originally created in their motherland.

Taking the graveyard shift Blal took to the decks, as it all looked like the night was coming to an end Blal managed to bring it all back with friend MC Dappa, playing a dub filled set incorporating some of the freshest sounds of neurofunk and tech he kept the entire floor dancing long after the lights in the venue where switched on!

With an absolutely wicked vibe throughout the night, This Way Up showed that you can organise a successful rave in the UK with cutting edge artists delivering Neurofunk / Techy Drum and Bass and it really makes people go nuts. One of the things that also heavily contributed to the unique feel inside, was the fact the promoters from New Zealand / UK and Eastern Europe were able to reach a variety of clubbers coming from those countries now residing in London helping to add to the vibe, proving once again that Drum And Bass is truly a worldwide thang.
