Mefjus - "Radix" [Tilt-Recordings / T-FILE019]

"Radix" is sidechain-compresison-funk based on a wall of midrange/bass.
And it is also actually the debut release of Mefjus from Austria.
Interestingly, although arranged in driving halfbar loops, the tune has
a breakdown countering the musical implication of its loop structure:
40 seconds of nothing but edits... Even the amen break is used here.
Overall the tune is overflowing with clever details and funny ideas.
Without doubt the world will see more of the talent behind this one!

"The Kernel" is the link between "System32" on TILT010
and "The Chip" (Isotop + Kaiza RMX) on the T-FILE-EP003:
it starts almost relaxed with the remix theme in 16 bars,
but then it constantly shortens the theme and builds up the
pressure until it revolves around a fully armed halfbar loop
and climaxes in total Schranz mayhem with double-time bassdrums
similar to "System32" which was released on vinyl two months ago.

Half a year after the original had been produced
and two months after its release as T-FREE054,
Kaiza gave "Blog Six" the works and made a remix
which has an updated sound quality and combines
Techno-DNB-typical halfbar-loop constructions and
Kaiza's trademark arrangement subtleties with a
4/4 bassdrum and a Minimal-influenced aesthetic,
creating a wide open space on the music's surface
and opening a new chapter in Kaiza's sound history.

Desecration is located in southeast England.
He has been in Drum & Bass for a while now
but is quite unknown in the scene at large.
His vinyl debut was a single on Skimrock
in 2005, followed by a feature on the third
"Urban Revolt" EP and CD on Outbreak Limited.
Many of his tunes are rather dark and hard,
but sometimes he makes technoid ones as well -
such as the powerful and juicy "Smack-Head".

This one is just pure mayhem: its dynamics push everyone towards dancefloors.
Shots does it again with a halfbar beat and with stab- and synth constructions

from a small town near Frankfurt (Germany) for two
Versions of this Ragga-influenced technoid banger.
Their arrangement structures are similar to "Fluid"

and they also contain only rhythmic ingredients.
But the Fatalists are less subtle and much heavier.

It starts with a very DJ-friendly intro and a king size
standard bridge with a filtered beat, drumroll and all.
Then sickness is unleashed: A wall of percussion hits the
fan and relentlessly beats the shit out of their eardrums.
"Fluid" manages to deliver a high dose of explosive funk

This tune was produced by D-Struct, Evancipation and
Signal under their alias "Robot Death Squad" in 2004,
some months after their celebrated tune "Hot 9mm"
which was released on Moving Shadow two years later.
But, by contrast, "Machine Sentry" never came out.
That is perhaps because it bridges the void between
classical Jungle and (seen from 2004) modern Neurofunk,
combining elements from both worlds into a hybrid.
Some other Robot Death Squad tunes do this as well,
but the Jungle is extraordinarily strong in this one.

The third T3K release is another one by Shots. "Conduction"
is a driving tool with the distinctive psycho-lead-synth.
Those who like "Synthetic" (T3K002) will love this one.
Based on a metallic but rolling beat, and building up
around the trademark stab-arrangement it climaxes with
a lead-synthline which is simply incredible.

Bazil, Phony, Lean and Danny Power are all hailing
from Guildford, UK (like Matt Domino, see T-Files 006).
They have tunes on Melting Pot Digital, Blackhoe and T-FREE,
and recently Bazil and Lean had their first vinyl release
together with Subtera on the Sudden Def sublabel Def:Ltd.
Now, all three tunes here have something in common:
they are on the technoid tip but bridge the gap to more
melodic styles. They combine Neurofunk midranges with
driving beats, melodic elements, dubby FX and even
female singing voices as pads, creating a musically
deep athmospheric dimension on top of a proper rollout.

After 5 years of label work, Tilt-Recordings reaches its 10th vinyl release.
As most of you know, times are getting harder for the vinyl industry, and the
small labels in the niche of technoid Drum & Bass are not exactly the winners.
So, more and more tunes will never see a vinyl release, and in order to make
them available to the supporters who play tunes from CD/laptop/iPod/etc, the
digital-only sublabel/series T-Files has been started in April 2008 and is back
since January 2009 with many releases to come. Also, Kaiza has started his own
digital-only imprint "T3K" for a similar sound, focussing mainly on Techno-DNB.
However, regardless of changing music markets, vinyl is still seen as the major
medium in the Drum & Bass circuit and it is still the main love of many DJs -
including DJ Hektik of the Tilt-Recordings crew (the guy who runs the label).
Therefore TILT010 will not have been the last vinyl release from this camp.
Isotop + Kaiza feat. Shots - "System32"
In the past six months, Bad Boy Kaiza and the Palatinians have joined forces
for a fruitful series of more than 20 collaboration tunes. Isotop and Kaiza even
started playing out together as a team of new school digital performers. Here,
they went into the studio with insane genius Shots for the hefty waltz "System32",
some serious, merciless hard Schranz'n'Bass almost as radical as it can get:
The tune has a pattern-based structure of minimal change; it is practically broken
down to the plain loops except for the mini-breaks and the subtle deconstruction
of the 16-bars-scheme by means of shifting the length of patterns and mini-breaks.
Even in this reduced structure there is a build-up, and with all its interwoven
counterdynamic call-and-response arrangements between all elements, the tune is
mad catchy and invites you to be flexed by its depth while it pounds heavily.
A tune to love and hate, this one is sure to mash up dancefloors and minds alike.
Budoka - "Damage Trust Inc"
From deep down in the underground Budoka appears at the surface of the scene
yet again with a solid Neurofunk workout in his own personal sound and style.
"Damage Trust Inc" easily stands the dancefloor test and international competition
with its powerful sub bassline and phat beat, rolling and pleasing to the ear.
And while the tune has a strong sound, there is a lot of open space in for the
smooth midranges which also sets a new benchmark in Budoka's production history.
The melodic hook makes the tune digestible even for female creatures of the night.
With his new studio and a handful of almost finished new tunes in the backhand,
Budoka is set to rock 2009. More material from him is sure to come, watch out!

"Kartago" has a fast paced beat and subtly rattling percussions.
It is free of generic neurofunk midranges and the athmosphere
stays very clean. There are only some classic Detroit stabs
tweaked and twisted with reverb and FX, seemingly working as
the lead sounds. But the true main element is rythm itself.

T-FREE057: Isotop + Shots feat. Kaiza - "Forsaken"
This is not only a tune but also an example of how several
people can accomplish more together than each of them alone.
Originally, the tune was just an unfinished solo project,
a loop of 40 seconds length which Shots had been working on.
Then, Isotop (partly with Shots) did a lot of soundshaping,
eqing etc and arranged it to a length of 3.5 minutes.
Finally, Kaiza changed the main structure, beat and bassline,
did further work on the stabs and fx and finished the tune.

The second T3K release comes from Shots, another upcoming talent
from Germany. Although he is not yet well known in the Drum & Bass scene
by now, he has already accomplished an own trademark style and unique
sound.
His name has appeared on solo releases and together with Isotop and/or
Kaiza on
Tilt-Recordings (TILT009), T-Files (T-FILE004) and T-Free (T-FREE040).
"Synthetic" is a driving piece of techno drum n bass. The Shots-typically
deep intro drops into heavily pounding beats, a dense stab arrangement and
psychotwisted lead-synths in a halfbar structure.

"The Chip" by Ruffen and Dissident is a classic from 2002.
It is an epic, futuristic and innovative piece of music,
a big tune in the informal history of technoid Drum & Bass.

However, Ruffen + Dissident were widely underrated back then,
and their tunes from this period are still mostly unknown.
One of the main reasons is that the russian CD labels like
Totally Advanced Music, Resistance Music and Respect Family
(on which most of their tunes were released, including two
full-length CD albums and features on various compilations)
have never been distributed outside of Russia, so our only
way of getting to know about this music was the internet.
Consequently, only the russian scene and relatively few
"neuro-nerds" from the western countries got to hear it.
Many worthy tunes like "Jesus Is The Brand" and "The Chip"
never saw the light of day in record stores internationally -
the only one that actually reached the scene outside Russia
was "Techneceum" by Dissident and well known russian artist
Paul B which came out on a Renegade Hardware EP in 2002.
Eventually, Dissident finally gained some of the attention
he deserves years later, with some of his tunes released on
labels like Covert Opeeration, Subvert Central and Offshore.
In 2006 he even had a much anticipated 3x12" LP scheduled
on the Gamma Ray label which, sadly, was never released.
Now, 7 years after the original release on Resistance Music,
Tilt-Recordings proudly present a re-release of "The Chip",
making the tune internationally available for the first time
together with the remix by Isotop and Kaiza which carefully
takes the original lead theme gradually to new levels...

T-FREE056: Air J + Sinecore - "Kira"
Since 2006, Sinecore has put out quite a number of tunes
as "Antichristus" (together with Peter Kurten, his brother),
including two vinyl releases on Independenza Records.
Also, he has started getting tunes out under his solo name
on Mindsaw Digital, T-Files and Nightmare Recordings.
"Kira" is a collaboration with his Belgian DJ colleague
Air J who also focuses on the hard/dark/technoid styles.
He started producing in 2008 and has just recently seen
his first vinyl release on the new label Kritical Bass,
also a collaboration of Air J with Peter Kurten is out on
Mindsaw Digital, and more of his tunes are forthcoming.

The second Tilt-Recordings Mix Podcast comes from Isotop + Kaiza.
The two artists/performers have started their first collaboration tune in August 2008, and since then they have completed more than 20 tunes together and also formed a team for live-performing / digital deejaying by means of using Ableton live together on different controlling devices.
Here they showcase a bunch of their productions from 2008 including some of the tunes scheduled for Kaiza's new digital-only label "T3K" which will be launched with its first release very soon...
It will be another label for technoid Drum & Bass maintained by the Trio-Music crew located in Mannheim (Germany). Its releases will range from minimal and deep to harder sounds, combining different kinds of subgenres. It is not as much a sub label of Tilt-Recordings as T-Files, but still affiliated - basically a project from the same family in the same network.
Togetherness and synergetic cooperation being his general vision, spirit and usually the background foundation of his projects (by choice), Bad Boy Kaiza, who is (besides producing tunes and digital deejaying/performing) also involved in other network based projects such as the vinyl + digital label Tilt-Recordings (together with his crew mate DJ Hektik and the much underrated Budoka) and the weekly radio show DMF, functions as the boss and "A&R" of T3K while basic label-consulting and -engineering is provided by DJ Hektik and the logo and artwork preset have been contributed by Shots.
