San Francisco Hyphy in the Mix
What up, Estonia? the Colonel MC here, resident at COMPRESSION, San Francisco's most hyphy night for six years runnin' . . .
Me and the crew are headed to Estonia in October to play with DJ SS, so I thought I'd stop by say what's up. We're very excited to come your way--none of us have been to Estonia before but we hear your parties are CRACKIN.
Anyhow, here's a mix that DJ Aye~N and I recorded for MC XYZ's BACK TO BACK SESSIONS mix series (with Metalheadz' D*Star on the second half). I hope you dig the sound, and we look forward to partying with you all in few weeks. Peace.
(Note: MC XYZ wrote the descr!ption included below)
Laced with Sex, Drugs, Drumz, Booze, Beats and Bass, DJ AYE~N (pronounced "Eye-In") and MC COLONEL (pronounced "Ker-nel") sonically bring all the perverse vices straight to your eardrums on this mix! Warning . . . from the get go this mix is a straight up dancefloor assault! Don't wait for a build up, there is no time to buckle up or to go over procedures in case of an emergency because there is only drop after drop after drop! Representing San Francisco (the "Yay Area") and Compression (one of the top weeklies Stateside) these boys would make the likes of E-40 proud by bringing the "Hyphy" movement to drum n bass!!! DJ AYE~N is precise on the mix and with a set like this AYE~N really shines by doing the job a quality selekta should do by selecting the right songs and putting them in the right place. From tunes such as the Chase & Status "The Druids" to "Skin Flint" by Swabe (DJ Die) up to the Craze and Infiltrata track "This Just Ain't The Same", AYE~N is a master of playing hot tune after hot tune on this mix. On the microphone, MC COLONEL (a character in his own right) flips some clever and hilarious flows from telling you to "take it down where the sun don’t shine", to explaining the 3 Piece Party ("the dj, the mc and the dancefloor"), to even calling out his DJ on his "final message". A drum n bass mc with persona, MC COLONEL keeps this mix lively with his unique voice and truly original style. This mix is truly a Pulp Fiction adrenaline shot to the heart, just make sure you don’t miss the mark or else you’re gonna have some "'splainin' to do"! "Ghost ride tha whip", fellas!!!
You can scream "bloody murder" at the top of your lungs, but trust me nothing can save you from truly one of the fiercest mixes in 2006. D*STAR puts Philly, GASM, Metalheadz, Renegade Hardware, stateside Drum n Bass and more on his back like Atlas and represents them all to – tha - FULLEST!!! Every track on this mix is a true drum n bass masterpiece and D*STAR weaves it all together beautifully on the decks. Songs like "Rhytual" by Jebar & Foyer , "Into My Head" by Random Movement and "Hard Living” by Outlook start the mix off with leviathan-esque grooves and rhythms that will have you bobbin' your head unconsciously as they bring the soul and funk! From there though, the true inner city livin' Philly stopmin' metal head in D*STAR emerges as the mix dives into the realm of "hard step" drum n bass. Songs such as "Hypno" by Ice Minus (my favorite tune on his mix) to the JuJu remix of Source Direct's (one of the hardest hitting producers ever) classic "Yo Bitch" hit the speakers with a relentless ferocity! The true highlights in this mix are the D*STAR produced (or co-produced in some cases) songs. From his "Martial Law" which has a blaring horn which is the alarm to storm on any dancefloor, to "Fist (A Special Dedication)" which plays with a flying flute sound over a grimey bassline (and a sample in it last seen/heard on DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing"), to the triple rewind worthy (don't worry he didn't) ultra-aggressive sounding D*STAR, Mason and Infiltrata collaboration, "Richochet", which connects both Philly (home of D*STAR and Mason) and Los Angeles (home of Infiltrata) clearly in the hook, "In L.A. I max out real hard / When I’m in Philly I build with the gods", D*STAR’s signature production touch is all over this mix. Whether it is bringing the heavy funk sound or putting the 'step' in hard step drum n bass, D*STAR unleashes a beast of a mix on Vol. 5!!!

Friction plays everything very quickly, with lots of double drops and other flair. Think Andy C, but very precise.
See you thursday . . .
