A high enough dose of any entheogen tends to dissolve boundaries on many levels, eventually leading to the dissolution of the boundary between self and environment, physically and every other way possible. When your self is at the point where it is about to fully dissolve and become 'one with the universe' there seems to be this mechanism that kicks in to prevent it from fully happening.

The 'little voice in your head' that each one of us know intimately, knows us more intimately than we know it. This voice is a mental tapestry of ideas and perceived 'facts' about existence which hold together that persons reality. When the self dissolves, this voice and it's lists of life (including all they hold precious and dear to them) go with it. But for some reason, it doesn't want to go and sometimes puts up a hell of a fight. It can compose (audial, visual and even tactile) nearly any scenario in your mind to get you to fight the dissolution. The worst case scenario is when people fight so hard that they physically try to stand up and run away or something.

Once on 5-meo-dmt, I was just about to dissolve entirely when I had this extremely vivid vision of myself as a completely paralyzed and disfunctional retard being spoon fed by my crying mother and father who are wondering what happened to me and I'm too lost in my own head to even explain to them that I took too much of a drug on accident and fucked myself up forever. Of course this wasn't true. In reality, I had taken just enough of the substance to cross the threshold and allow my ego to entirely dissolve. Fortunately I realized that in the depths of my panic and was able to 'let go' into the experience. When I came back to my body a few minutes later, I had a typical re-birth type experience involving extreme gratitude for being alive and breathing in a flesh vessel.

Though this wasn't exactly a death experience, I've had other trips, and so have many people I know, in which the scenario that the "little voice" composes is one in which the you are GOING TO DIE. OH FUCK I'M DEAD, I FUCKING KILLED MYSELF. And then the extreme horror (which I believe to be the pure essence of terror itself) ensues and permeates your being for an excruciating eternal moment before you pass on into complete unity with all of existence.

It's no wonder people feel like they were just reborn after going from a state of extreme terror to one of extreme bliss and gratitude.

The contrast between natural beauty and the often enigmatic side of technology plays a large role in my work as do various mystical experiences during my formative years.

In the end I can only see our technology as being very much a part of nature. If beehives and honeycomb are natural, then why not sky scrapers? Seeing humans and human bi-product as natural seems like an important step in truly actualizing ourselves.
