Merrissa Campbell, better known by her stage name Cooly G is a steadily rising star out of Brixton, South London. She is a producer, a DJ, a vocalist, the founder and head of the Dub Organizer label, a former music technology tutor, an ex-semi-pro footballer and a mum. Basically, every time you ever think to yourself, “I should really do more”, it’s because people like Cooly G exist.
Being one of the two female producers on Hyperdub, the seminal dubstep label that’s run by Kode9 and is home to Burial, she released her debut single Love Dub b/w Narst after a string of self-produced CDR-s. The single got people pretty excited; she was single of the week in the Guardian, One to Watch in the Independent, got interviewed all over and was immediately snapped up for remixes by the majors as well as starting to get bookings all over the world.
On her recently released debut full-length, Playin Me, Campbell sidesteps the driving 2-step garage and grimey tribal sounds of her earlier work for a more intimate effort that’s carefully composed and emotionally intense. The bare-bones elements of her sound are still there: she just allowed the music to be deep and understated enough to allow the richness of her slow-burn compositions to take center stage.
Over the last few years Cooly G has established a very distinct profile and when it comes to electronic music that’s cutting edge and pushing the envelope, her name is one that keeps on popping up.
